Pratchett writes that the natural size of a coven is one. ("Witches don't have leaders, and Weatherwax was the most respected of all the leaders they didn't have.")
Every regular coven i have ever met has been fewer than seven people, but they all have stories about how they use to have more than six before "Dovesong and her boyfriend broke away to form that Other Circle". Every time seven wiccans/witches get together they argue until half of them split off and form a new tradition (often based on a new way to mis-pronounce the names of the gods). Three seems to be the most stable number, but even that will fracture if two of them start dating.
What is the right number, the best number, the most stable number and the most common number and your number? That is five different questions.
