My first encounter with the paranormal: Mothman
I was about twelve years old when I had my first experience with anything supernatural. It was at church camp and we were playing capture the flag with water balloons. I was hunched down behind a log waiting for the opportune moment to take the flag. Then start sprinting like crazy back to my base. When out of nowhere. Something swooped down in front of me.
It had huge glowing red eyes, a gray body and what appeared to be wings that were almost bat like. As it stood up on its hind legs, I froze. This thing was no owl, despite some of reports people make. I had seen owls. Growing up in the hills of West Virginia, I had seen a lot of woodland creatures and owls don’t stand as tall as full grown adult. I have even worked with owls when I attended my first college. They had a nature center where I volunteered.
As it moved toward me, it seemed to be insubstantial. Almost as if reality itself were blurring around its form. Then a voice entered my mind that for some strange reason I knew was coming from it. It said my name. Needless to say I was unfrozen and ran like hell to the nearest camp counselor.
Later, I managed to put a name to its existence. The Mothman or Owlman or whatever else you would like to refer to them as. Trust me they have many names throughout history. Strangely, I have found a kinship with these beings, not a guardian type of kinship but an understanding. I know how that might sound but it’s the truth. Some people don’t believe me and at church camp they chalked it to the devil trying to steal my soul, which I knew was total bs.
