The one I like to employ is The Celtic Cross:




Why?

it is simple, straight to the point, and has had a history of demonstrating accurate results for me. Then again, I have only gotten better with it over time, so that might have something to do with it as well.

For simple should I or shouldn't I questions, I use the three card spread :-

Past, Present, Future.

This works very well for me 90% of the time but for very complex issues, I use the Celtic cross or similar.

3 card spread all the time is what I use, need to expand on that then just think the question and draw another card, it don't matter if its from the top of the pack or in the middle.. or even if you know what the top card is and you take it it will have changed to the right card for the question asked...

The cards will eventually "speak to you" anyway.. and there will become a point where you do not need to do any spread all you have to do is look at the pack and the cards will "pop" into your mind...

Yep, I mainly use the Celtic Cross spread as well. It seems to be the most commonly used spread. I also like to use the 3 card past, present and future spread. Sometimes for relationships I use a 5 card spread that I found in one of my tarot books. It has worked quite accurately for me in the past.

I don't know why, but the Celtic Cross doesn't work very well for me. I prefer to do open readings, a reading with no spread, instead unless the reading is for a conflict between two people. In that case, I adore the Yin Yang spread found in Joan Bunning's "Learning the Tarot (in 19 Lessons)."

Indeed the Celtic Cross is the best spread in my opinion. I use it in many of my questions. I also use the 3 card spread, but not as indicated as Past-Present-Future, but as means to ask yes/no questions. I open the three cards, and if they support each other, the answer is yes. If they negate each other, it's a no.
Doesn't always work though.

I use a directional spread, with a card for each direction/element and then one in the center to bring each direction together. I mostly use this for an overall feel of what's going on in my life. The directions represent Mental, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual aspects of ones life.

When I have a direct question, I usually use just one card and then build from it.

I tend to use a 3-card reading in general, and then more complex spreads if more questions arise.

3-card is so adaptable. Past-present-future, querent's position-central idea-advice/conclusion, etc. And then you can take any card from the spread that you have more questions about and make it the querent in another spread to maintain the focus on that aspect of the question.

The 15-card layout utilized in the Thoth deck is also amazingly profound. Three cards for the present situation, three cards for past/karmic actions, three cards for outside influences, and six for a single future or two possible futures depending on the overall reading of those six cards.

Though sometimes I just go without a spread and draw cards until the cards tell me to stop, and use my own intuition to piece them together.
